Every busy working mom thinks about it, but she may not want to talk about it much. Yep…I’m talking about exercise and weight. So many women struggle with maintaining a healthy weight and exercise plan after having children; there just isn’t enough time (or energy) to keep up the routine.

But there is a way to make regular exercise and weight management a lifestyle and Dr. Michelle Segar, creator of the Essential Steps program, has the answer! I had the opportunity to speak with Michelle about the topic of women, exercise and weight, and you’re invited to listen in on our conversation. In this 20-minute audio recording, Michelle will share the top five reasons women exercise and the two that will change the way you look at diet and exercise forever. Michelle is insightful and passionate about this topic, so tune in and enjoy!

Dr. Segar has some great insights and really hit the nail on the head with her comment about it being more about food than exercising. I am finishing up a “boot camp” workout that lasted for a month. It consisted of a one-hour workout every morning, but the most important part of the boot camp is the eating program. I can guarantee that if someone did the workouts and not the eating program they wouldn’t see much of a change. It is amazing what we eat without knowing it. Sugar is the big one. There is so much sugar in everything–milk, carrots, potatoes, green beans, fruit…and that’s the stuff that is supposed to be good for you! I was eating “Go Lean Crunch” cereal and milk every morning for breakfast as my normal routine until I was told to take a look at the amount of sugar. The milk alone had 20 grams per serving (and I was eating at least a serving and a half). The cereal had about 37 grams per serving (again, I was pouring more than a serving)!!! I was getting over 70 grams of suger in my body before even walking out the door! Top that off with some cream in my coffee and it’s no wonder I couldn’t lose weight even with working out regularly. I lost 6 lbs. within two weeks of cutting sugar out of my diet. The main thing I noticed though is that my body was more toned. I was losing that layer of fat over the muscle I knew was under there. Even though boot camp is over, you can bet my eating habits have changed for good. It requires some preparation to make sure I have high-protein snacks all day, but it’s totally worth it!
