Too smart for my own good

Sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut. Whenever I make a new discovery, whether it’s earth-shattering or just mildly interesting, I have to tell people about it.

So after writing the post Rising Gas Prices Affect Your Work/Life, I proudly showed my husband the scribbles where I calculated how much it cost for him to drive to work each day (about 12 bucks a day). He was pretty disturbed by the figure too. Oh and also corrected me — 99% of his job (in Sales) in conducted by phone or via web meetings, which only strengthens my point that driving 62 miles a day to do perform his job from his company’s cubicle, at a cost of $12/day, is a bit silly.

Anyway, this weekend we were consumed with the cost of gas. As a result, whenever we had the option to drive somewhere we stopped to figure out how much it would cost us before deciding to go — “If we go to church, it’ll cost us $10 to get there and back, plus we’ll have to tithe.” (Heh. As if we should short-change God for the 10 bucks it cost to drive to church.)

In some ways, it’s a good thing to stop, think, and then act; it keeps us from making hasty decisions. But sheez! All weekend it felt like things we normally enjoy doing were being squashed by the gas prices. (sigh)

What have I done?! I need a new focal point this week because the gas thing will seriously stress me out if I give it much more thought. Any ideas?

There are other ways of getting around, of course, as I’m sure you know. My husband rides his bike to work - a total of 10 miles a day. This is how he maintains his fitness while also getting to work. I am a SAHM, and there are days when the car just sits, doing nothing. And, should I want to go somewhere, I can simply put my son in the seat on the back of my bike and pedal away. I’ve also taken advantage of the great public transportation system that my city of Portland, OR, has to offer. A little creativity goes a long way.
