Hi -
What a great post about how you answer that very important question: "what do you do?" I left my big corporate career this year to pursue a dream I've had for a long time (to write a book about single moms). When I first quit and people asked me that question, I always prefaced my answer with "Well I WAS the blah-blah-of-blah....but now I am trying to write a book...plus I get to see my daughter more." It took me a couple of months to say,"I'm a writer and a mom."
I think the one thing I would add to list above is to go easy on yourself as you adjust to a new pair of shoes. Once you are conscious of what is happening in your head, the answer will come back to you...and being patient with yourself helps!

Michele,

What a great article! As a coach for mom entrepreneurs, I have spoken on this topic dozens of times, but I have never seen the comparison to a computer operating system. It works so well to make this complex question of who we are as mothers and entrepreneurs simple to understand.

I loved this so much I included it as a guest post (with full attribution, of course!) on my blog. You are a wonderful writer! I would also love to have you speak in my teleseminar series called WoMEN: What Mom Entrepreneurs Need. It's clear that one thing all mom entrepreneurs need is a working definition of who they are!

Please email me if you're interested.

With much respect,

Lara Galloway

What a great article. I am lucky enough to be able to lead with I am mother since my position deals with early childhood literacy. And of course the work I do with blogging is in the framework of being a mother. I feel so very blessed.
