My father first introduced me to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book, by Stephen Covey, when I was 14 years old. At the time I could have cared less about it. So the book was filed away for the next five years.

Then, while a sophomore in college, the book leapt off my bookshelf (not literally, but the title did catch my eye quite suddenly one day) so I picked it up and started to read it. Actually, I devoured it — highlighting passages and figuring out ways to apply it to my life. Six months later it was on my bookshelf collecting dust…again.

Fast forward five years and I’m working for a start-up dot-com and was asked to become certified to teach the 7 Habits training program for the company. Of course, I willingly accepted this opportunity to reunite with the book. Since then, I’ve taught the program countless times and have sought to apply its principles into my every day life. The book was actually one of the motivating forces behind me leaving my traditional full-time job to pursue this entrepreneurial career I now enjoy.

Over time, I’ve learned that while the principles in the book are extremely simple and practical, they are tough to implement. The book invites you to change, and change is difficult for most people. It boils down to trying to update internal scripting that has been deeply embedded into you for years, and that kind of shift in perspective can be hard to overcome. Now I know what my dad tried to give the book to me when I was 14! :)

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a constant in my life and it should be in yours too. The principles are foundational to having a balanced, integrated work/life that is meaningful and purposeful. So, I encourage you to take time to become a student of the book, just as I have.
