Today I sat in on a live audiocast and tweet session with financial guru, Suze Orman. The event addressed the specific needs of women in business, but offered insight that anyone could use. Special thanks to Avon and Maria Bailey of BSM Media for the opportunity to participate on the call and live Q&A session.
Suze brought amazing energy to the call and I was especially impressed that she took the time to research the mom bloggers who participated on the call – sister knew details! That alone shows that she’s a woman of action, not just words, when she says, “My goal is to serve the needs, places and times around us.” Big props to Suze for walking the talk!
Suze dropped tons of wisdom during the hour-long session that can be summed up in these powerful sound bytes:
- Every woman needs at least eight months of living expenses, especially in today’s economy;
- To create your eight-month fund, “play financial unemployment” while you have a job or income;
- Think carefully about starting a new business if you don’t have an eight-month cushion for living expenses;
- Stop creating debt; set aside money now and help other be/have move;
- Common business mistake made by women – refusing to give up the business (or change it) when it’s not working;
- Women need to give TO themselves as much as they give OF themselves, especially when it comes to money;
- You don’t know how strong you are until you’re put to the test.
- One last important bit of advice…protect your tomorrow today.
Essentially, if you don’t already have a Will & Trust, then you’re doing life without a life vest.
My husband and I put together our Will & Trust after our first born, but I’ll be the first to admit we haven’t looked at it since then and our life circumstances have changed dramatically – namely adding two more children! The thought of answering tough questions like, Who will be the guardian of your children if you and your husband die? is difficult to imagine. Plus, the expense of hiring an attorney (last time it cost us $3,500!) to draft our Will & Trust feels prohibitive during a tight economic crunch. But based on Suze’s urgining, I’m getting our Will & Trust updated and back in order – starting today.
And you can too!
