I love books. Books are a portal for an unending amount of information and inspiration. I personally have a slight addiction to the aroma of books (call me crazy!) and just love being around them. Because of my insatiable desire for books and reading, my kids have become voracious readers as well – and I love it! That’s why we’re hyped up about Children’s Authors and Illustrators Week.
During this annual event, acclaimed authors and illustrators from Children’s Authors Network (CAN!) visit schools, libraries, and children’s shelters all over the country. Lively storytelling, fascinating presentations, and hands-on writing workshops make books spring to life, and inspire a life-long love of reading and writing.
Here are some things you can do to encourage your children during this week (and every week!):
- Visit your local library or book store to explore the thousands of books available. Be sure to ask if your library or bookstore is hosting an event in honor of this week.
- Commit to reading as a family. On most nights, our family gathers in the living room about an half hour before bedtime for quiet reading time. We take turns reading our favorite short stories. My youngest (3 years old) reads the pictures.
- Reach out to connect with your children’s favorite author. Help your child write and mail a letter to the author. You might be surprised with a personal response!
