Akilah R.
Lawrenceville, GA
Mother of two – 2 and 4
I’m a working mom who…
…Is a full-time freelance writer, always seeking new assignments. I also operate a graphic design and copy writing company with my husband, and we do all this from our home office. We have “active” schedules that include finding creative and fun activities for our two daughters, and making time to network and grow our ventures. We also volunteer in the Atlanta Caribbean community to work on betterment projects for Caribbean people in Atlanta and in their respective countries.
I parent. I write. I love. I am…that’s the story.
This is what I did today…
- 9:30 a.m. – (half asleep) roll over to pick up my smart phone and see what emails, voice mails, and texts will need my attention today.
- 10:00 a.m. – focus on my 2 year old bursting into my room to tell me about whatever “emergency” she had going on at that moment
- 10:20 a.m. – go downstairs to talk with hubby about our work (at home) schedules for the day and find out whether either of us have out-of-home meetings to attend.
- 10: 30 a.m. – make my breakfast smoothie(hubby would have already made breakfast for our daughters and himself).
- 10:50 a.m. – log on to my computer to read wonderful blogs and get my mind ready for the day
- 11:30 a.m. – return all emails and phone calls, and update craigslist with new rental properties.
- 1:30 p.m. – do Click N Kids with my 2 year old after she’s had lunch
- 2:15 p.m. – head out to pick up my 4 year old from school
- 2:40 p.m. – take girls to the park or library or bookstore OR drag them along on errands.
- 4:00 p.m. – get home, fix snack for girls, return more calls and emails, eat something, clean up (because something always needs to be cleaned up), and prepare for exercise
- 5:00 p.m. – head to the YMCA for exercise class
- 6:45 p.m. – get home, help the girls wash up and put them at the table (hubby usually has dinner ready), and we eat
- 7:30 p.m. – bathe the girls, do a bit of yoga with them (sometimes), read them a story, put in their bedtime CD, then grab a shower.
- The rest of the night is usually when I dig into my writing and I head to bed at around 2:00 a.m.
My biggest career challenge since becoming a mom and how I overcame it…
I’m still overcoming embracing the imbalances that come with working motherhood. I find inspiration in speaking with other Execumamas and I read my book often because it’s like rewinding the conversations for an extra boost when needed – kind of like Vitamin C
My top 3 musical artists:
- Maxwell
- Etana
- Donnie Hathaway
