Jessica Knows inspired me to write this post on how I’m fighting the frump. Hope it inspires you to do the same as we enter the New year. If I can do it, so can you!
Well…since my disappointing finish at the San Antonio Rock ‘n Roll half marathon last month, I committed to finally getting serious about dropping the last of my baby fat. After all, my baby is 3-1/2 years old!! Plus, it bothered me that I had logged on average 22-28 miles of running a week to prepare for that race and hadn’t dropped a single pound! AND…when I met my big sis at the race, I saw that she was sportin’ a new, slimmer figure. Wah?! Nothing like a little sibling rivalry to get me motivated.
So the Monday after I returned from San Antonio, I signed up for Weight Watchers online; my sister had used the program to drop 30 lbs in six months. My goal was to fight the frump and get back to a weight that made me feel good again (especially when I was running…dragging around a load isn’t good for my knees and joints!).
And just by way of full-disclosure…I’m 5’9″-ish (maybe be closer to 5’10″ according to my 5’9″ friends) and started this journey at 163 lbs. According to my doctor, this was a healthy weight and fell within an acceptable BMI category. She’s right, but I was at the upper-end of the healthy BMI range, which meant if I ate one too many donuts, I’d be officially overweight.
My fight the frump goal – lose 15 18-20 lbs. Updated 12-29-08: I decided to just go all out and dropped my goal weight a few lbs.
Of course, there’s more to fighting-the-frump besides weight. So, here’s what else I’m doing:
- Re-charging my workout plan: When I’m not training for a race, I run 3-4 miles about five days a week…all I do it run. Any seasoned runner or fitness fanatic knows that’s not the best approach. To help me not only lose weight, but also prevent injury (which is common for me), I’ve started to do more strength training and am also reducing the number of days a week I’m out running. In fact, I’m signed up for an “Extreme Conditioning” class that starts in Jan. ’09, meeting twice a week for one hour. I’ll run just three days a week and maybe add a day for hiking.
- Purging my frumpy clothes: Admit it…you have frumpy clothes in your closet too – clothes that just hang on you without much form (must hide the post-baby pooch!) and make you look…well, BIG. I’m trading my frumpy clothes for more form-fitted items. Now, before you think I’ve turned into a real-life hoochie-mama…I’m just talking about clothes that do more to accentuate my figure than hide it. Did I mention I’ve nearly lost 10 lbs on Weight Watchers already? I’m kind of diggin’ my new body!
- Putting on my face: As a telecommuting working mom, I take my appearance for granted during the work week. It’s a good day if I actually brush my hair or wash my face before I drop the kids off at school. Most days of the week, I’m still wearing my running gear (along with my funky dried up sweat) too. My poor kids…thank goodness they’re too young to care or voice their opinion about it. But, I feel bad for them and me, so I’m now taking an extra few minutes to wash up, brush my hair and apply at least mascara and tinted lip gloss every day.
- Expecting greatness: Before starting on this quest to fight the frump, my thoughts went something like this – “I work so hard to lose weight, and I can’t,” “Gosh…she always looks so good,”Ugh…this pudge around my waist is disgusting.” Okay, you get the point – I was stuck in negative thinking and therefore, inaction. These days I walk out of the house in my figure-fitted clothes, lookin’ cute, put together and SMILING because I expect greatness will come from my ban on the frump!

I’ll be fighting this year too!
I am joining you on this. At least you only have to drop baby fat. My baby is almost 2. I have gained the dreaded “I live in Dover, DE with not one friend to kick it with, sit at the computer all day, boarderline depressed, eat the kids left overs extra 20 pounds on top of baby fat.”
So here is to us fighting the frump!
I need to fight the work at home fat. I spend so much time at the computer that I never get enough exercise.
I am a member of WW Online but have been spending the money but not the time. So, I will join you too. I am going to post about this on my site as well.
My son is about to turn 1 on the 27th of December and my goal was to be back in shape by then. But then “life” got in the way and I got lazy. I am still technically in the healthy range for my height but I want to get back to my pre-preggo weight. But more than that I want to feel healthy and right now I still feel the jiggle.
I am so far out of the healthy weight range it is crazy. I am hoping that Santa drops off a Wii and Wii Fit at my house so that I can start exercising while having fun. If that doesn’t happen I am going to have to figure out another fitness plan. But I am going to do better in the new year.
I am too hoping that Santa drops off a Wii and Wii Fit at my house so that I can start exercising while having fun. If that doesn
Hmm…I think you have given me my motivation – I am 10lbs away from my pre 2-year-old weight – so close yet so far…I think I will join in the fun in the new year!!
Its official I am going to start fighting the frump with you!!
