My View: Jessica N.

Jessica N.
Montreal, QC (formerly in Columbus, OH)
Mother of two – 2 and 2 months

I’m a working mom who…
…is returning to work after the birth of baby #2, working full-time as an Executive Recruiter. We moved to Montreal, Quebec not long ago, so my work is now allowing me to work remotely from home. It certainly has it’s perks, as well as it’s challenges!

This is what I did today…

  • 5:00 am – Wake up and feed the baby.
  • 5:30 am – Everyone else is sleeping again. Ponder whether it’s worth trying to go back to sleep for another half hour!
  • 6:00 am – Wake up hubby, baby and toddler. Get everyone ready to leave the house for the day.
  • 8:00 am – Drive the kiddos to daycare and try not to wreck while reading emails on my Blackberry.
  • 9:30 am – Arrive back home. Sit down at whatever space didn’t get destroyed during activities from the night before (desk, dining room table, etc) and do some research, reply to emails, conduct phone interviews.
  • Noon – Lunch!
  • 12:30 pm – Back to work…
  • 4:00 pm – Get in the car to go pick up the kiddos from daycare. Try not to wreck again during end-of-day conference calls and while reading emails on the Blackberry.
  • 8:00 pm – Get the kiddos to bed. Helping them relax usually means I fall asleep with the toddler.
  • 9:00 pm – Unfold myself and get out of the toddler’s bed. Check emails again. Chat with hubby and consider watching some TV?
  • 9:30 pm – Relish this “me time” and either stay up way too late doing WHATEVER I WANT (yeah!!) or accidentally fall asleep fully dressed and with all the lights on.

My biggest career challenge since becoming a mom and how I overcame it…
My biggest career challenge was knowing that I could quit my job and stay home full-time after the birth of our second child, but accepting that I didn’t want to. As a mom, I felt like I was cheating my kids out of the attention they deserved from me by going back to work. I’ve overcome this by realizing that contributing professionally makes me a happier mommy too, and they deserve quality time with me at my best, not just larger quantities of time.

My Top 3 Favorite Toys

  • Blackberry – keeping connected with work while also catching up on gossip w/friends
  • Mr. Banana – an adorable stuffed banana that can always coax a smile from the baby
  • DVD Player in the minivan – gives me at least as long as one Dora episode to talk with my husband

What a GREAT post…
I can only smile as I think of trying to crawl out of bed after relaxing the kids, deciding to work, sleep, clean, or trying to figure out how to do it all from the jacuzzi! Thanks for sharing…

Sound so, so familiar. Is it wrong for me to wish I could send my toddler to preschool Monday-Friday instead of just three days a week? Considering we’re a one income household

Sounds familiar to me back when I worked outside the home. I went through lots of guilt!
