In 2007, I started running again, something I used to do regularly before having children. Running has its obvious benefits, but it’s not always easy to keep it up, especially when I become overwhelmed with working motherhood. Here are the top five reasons why I keep at it:
- To keep my weight under control – nothing like a solid 3 miles to zap a few hundred calories;
- To clear my head – if I’m stressed out, running almost instantly relieves the pressure;
- To get energized – some days I feel so sluggish that I want to crawl into bed, but if I overcome that and go for a run, I’m a ball of energy afterwards;
- To socialize or be alone – when I run with a friend, it’s nice to catch up and talk; when I run alone it’s a nice break from my busy life where everyone pulls at me;
- To accomplish a goal – it feels good to finish something big, so having a race on my calendar (like the 1/2 marathon in November) motivates me to stick to my run plan.

If I liked to run, it would be such a nice get a way from the everyday stress. I should start at least walking every day!
